As March 8 approaches, AI threatens to accentuate gender inequalities (underrepresentation, bias, exposed professions, etc.). Without training or governance, technological progress will become social regression.
As March 8 looms, the ritual incantation of women’s rights comes up against a danger that our organizations neglect: the widening of an unprecedented social divide, orchestrated by artificial intelligence. This is no longer content with promising a revolution, it is already profoundly disrupting the framework of our organizations. From content production to recruitment, including customer relationship management, no part of the company is immune to this wave. Behind the technological enthusiasm, a silent threat is becoming clearer: the risk of reinforcing the downgrading of certain professional categories that are now predominantly feminized.
This peril centers around several critical blind spots that are often overlooked in the overall thinking around artificial intelligence and its real-world implications.
The first lies in the very composition of the sector. With only 22% women among global AI professionals, and less than 14% in management roles, systems design is seriously lacking gender diversity. This representation deficit directly influences technical decisions: choice of data, performance metrics and selection of use cases. As a result, the most archaic stereotypes become automated. UNESCO has also just documented this tendency of language models to confine women to domestic or sexualized roles. These biases then pollute everyday tools – writing job offers, HR summaries or customer service scenarios – circulating the data bias towards the organization.
The risk of a gender gap with regard to AI
At the same time, the transformation of professions hits asymmetrically. Administrative and support jobs, held mainly by women, experience exposure to AI three times higher than that of men in developed countries. These functions, often wrongly judged as subordinate, today find themselves on the front line of a technological “blast” which threatens their very sustainability. Waiting for the social tragedy to occur constitutes a strategic mistake. This divide is coupled with a worrying gap in usage. While traditional search tools display perfect parity, AI remains the domain of two-thirds of men. This “gender gap” does not come from a lack of skills, but from a powerful psychological barrier: many women feel a sense of imposture, even cheating, by using these assistants. Without firm managerial guidance and real encouragement, this reluctance will quickly transform into a career handicap, influencing promotions and the visibility of projects.
Faced with this risk of human industrial accident, the company must make AI a central pillar of its Social Responsibility (CSR). The “Social” aspect of ESG cannot be limited to administrative reports or comfort measures; today it requires protecting the employability of the most exposed employees. This is especially true since the “Hope & Fear” study shows that the company is the only economic agent that employees trust to develop their skills.
To transform this threat into a lever for progress, the company must take concrete and immediate actions. This starts with rigorous, disaggregated measurement of AI usage in order to identify and correct disconnects as soon as they appear. Rather than letting self-training reign, organizations must guarantee protected learning paths and short, repeated training focused on real use cases. This requirement for transparency also applies to suppliers, who are required to prove the absence of bias in their algorithms through regular audits.
Finally, the implementation of strict internal governance, associated with an acceleration of diversity within the Data and Security teams, will secure the deployment of the tool. AI does not, in essence, guarantee any social progress. Only training and governance choices will decide how the benefits are shared.
In a context of demographic decline, increasing productivity represents a vital necessity for Europe, but this gain cannot be built on the exclusion of half of humanity. The future of technology will be equal, or it will only be a regression. The direction remains clear: document, test, and above all, support.
