Gemini cli stands out as a serious alternative to Claude Code of Anthropic and Codex CLI of Openai.
Another code agent, but signed Google this time. Google Cli, presented this Wednesday, June 25, is precisely an autonomous code agent integrated into the console, available under Windows, Linux and Mac. It is Google’s direct response to Codex Cli and Claude Code. Above all, it is completely free.
Edition of code, execution of orders …
Available in open source, Gemini CLI can clone deposits, create projects, deploy applications and generate code, without claiming in -depth technical knowledge. It is used directly from the device terminal (as its name suggests). Gemini Cli allows in particular to create git branches, generate requests and even automatically debug code. The tool can analyze entire code bases, understand dependencies, and offer contextualized improvements.
But Gemini Cli is not limited to the terminal. The agent can be invoked from Slack or Microsoft Teams but also from Gemini Code Assist in Visual Studio Code. The goal is to make Gemini Cli accessible in all the applications used by developers. Finally, its native integration of Gemini 2.5 Pro and its context window of 1 million tokens allows it to understand and analyze very large code bases.
An agent for developers but not only
Google does not want to confine Gemini clos to the world of the code. Thanks to MCP, the tool can become a powerful multimedia creation platform. During a presentation in front of several dozen journalists, Google demonstrated Gemini CLI’s ability to generate complex creative content, such as a cat video traveling in Australia. Using Google’s native APIs with visual generation models (VEO, Imagen, etc.), the assistant can now produce visual and audiovisual content on simple command.
Entrepreneurs, marketers, content creators and professionals from various sectors can use the tool to generate communication media, presentations, marketing media, even editorial content, specifies Google.
Gemini Cli’s real point
Google strikes hard with its pricing policy. Unlike its competitors who often charge several tens, or even hundreds of dollars a month, Google offers its entirely free assistant. Independent developers, students, freelancers and professionals will be able to use Gemini Cli without financial limit, with up to 1,000 daily requests offered (with a maximum of 60 requests per hour). A volume calculated on the basis of the internal uses of Google doubled to guarantee practically unlimited use.
Gemini Cli is accessible to all this June 25. The only required condition: have a Google account. For companies requiring specific configurations, Google also offers the use of API Vertex keys, offering advanced governance and deployment options. Internally, the use of Gemini Cli doubles each week among Google engineers.
By offering a free, open source, multiplatform and particularly powerful tool, Google directly challenges its competitors in AI, Openai and Anthropic. The Moutain View firm therefore strikes a big blow, and clearly affirms its ambition: to become an essential actor in artificial intelligence for developers.
